Melody Maker 'Maker Breakers' piece, 26 June 1999

Venini
Arch-glam drama

WHO THEY?
Inevitably to be described over the next couple of months as 'ex-Pulp guitarist Russell Senior's new band'. In reality they're T-Rex meets Blondie on a day trip to Sheffield, via the Midlands and Liverpool.

WHY BUY?
For something different. "There aren't many scenes in Sheffield, but there are so many in London. There are probably only about 200 people involved in them, because you see the same faces every time you go out." And for the fact that singer and ex-model Debbie cites her favourite current act as The Divine Comedy and her favourite Seventies band as Slade, and sees no difference in credibility between the two.

TELL US MORE...
Russell and Debbie knew each other from "not so much going to parties as looking for parties". Guitarist Nick bumped into Robert and invited him to audition. Rich: "Russell just looked at me and said, 'Can you drum?'"

"No one's really been recruited to the band because of the musical talent," Russell continues. "It's been much more about having the right look. We had to have Danny (keyboardist) because he's such a fanny magnet!"

BEST LISTENED TO...
At one of the forthcoming gigs, which will feature cameras trained on the audience. Venini are charmed. Hear them now or forever curse your ears.
